On November 23, the kick off meeting of the Erasmus + project, BRAIN4TRAIN, took place in Gliwice (Poland). In this project, ESPRM is one of its partners, together with the Biomechanics Institute of Valencia (Spain) -IBV, the Polytechnic Institute of Milan (POLIMI) and the Silesian University of Technology (SUT) of Gliwice. The latter acted as host because it is the project coordinator.

As ESPRM representative, Enrique Varela-Donoso attended, who gave, among other things, to get to know our European Society through a brief presentation of the same.

The meeting that lasted about 6 hours and took place at the host university itself (SUT), served so that the parties involved, ESPRM among others, agreed on how to carry out this project that will last about 2 years and whose end result will be the creation of an online course on the application of Virtual Reality in the management and treatment of the patient suffering from Stroke.

The key action of the Project is “Cooperation for innovation and the exchange of good practices”. And above all taking into account that the use of new technologies in the field of rehabilitation for disability diminishing, is fundamental today, and will be in the future, to reduce both activity limitation as well as participation restriction of affected subjects.

Objective and scope of the project

As said before, the main objective is the creation of an online course to assure at the maximum number of European and even non-European medical specialists in PRM a worthy education and training regarding the applicability of biomechanical technology systems (BTS) and Virtual Reality (VR) in the context of treatment of neurological patients especially those who have suffered from Stroke.

Brain4Train project will promote the training in the practical use of new technological devices. The arrival of this knowledge to PRM physicians will also encourage ESPRM to promote the use of new technological systems and in to update the facilities, labs and in the end the technology the use in their daily practice

Accordingly, in the execution of the project it will proposed a training and learning methodology and a structure of contents based on previously identified needs of all relevant targeted stakeholders; these needs will be clearly identified by means of different surveys performed by the consortium.

Action plan of partners

The first is to be clear about what the contents of the future online course should be. To do this, it is a priority to prepare a questionnaire that must be sent to as many rehabilitation doctors who work with stroke patients to know both their experience in handling these new technologies, as well as their shortcomings and what they expect from them. ESPRM must therefore oversee the elaboration of this questionnaire and try to spread it as much as possible among its partners. For this and other purposes, we also want to invite the PRM Board

Once the questionnaire has been prepared, disseminated and received, it will proceed, with the help of experts in the subject of preparing the contents of the course.

The first course that will be given will be a pilot course for 50 PRM doctors (in October 2018). IBV will be responsible of holding the event, participating as key note speaker. POLIMI and SUT could participate as a key note speaker of the event. ESPRM will have a key role during the organization of the event, encouraging, among their associated partners, the participation in this event. Later and according to the result will be able to launch official courses.

With this, as with other initiatives already underway, ESPRM aims to give the possibility to PRM Physicians to increase the training and knowledge in the management of new technologies for a better rehabilitation of the disabled
